- How to install the Bionova ventilation system
1. The Importance of Ventilation Systems in Maintaining Hygiene and Air Circulation
As an eco-friendly and water-saving innovation, composting toilets are gradually becoming part of everyday life. Proper airflow is crucial to ensure an efficient composting process. Composting can be aerobic or anaerobic, but aerobic composting is preferable because it reduces odors effectively. Bionova leverages the principles of aerobic composting.
Specifically, a good ventilation system can promptly remove odors and harmful gases such as methane and ammonia, keeping the environment fresh. Proper airflow also helps regulate temperature and humidity, optimizing composting conditions. Enhanced ventilation reduces bacterial growth and lowers the risk of infection, making the toilet more hygienic. Additionally, a fresh air environment can improve user comfort.
Therefore, to ensure your composting toilet works at its best, it’s essential to keep the ventilation ducts clear and maintain good air circulation.
2. Components of the Bionova Ventilation Kit
When you purchase a Bionova toilet, it generally includes the following ventilation components:
- 6 x white ventilation pipes, 675mm each
- 5 x white PVC pipe couplings
- 2 x white PVC 90-degree elbows
- 1 x white PVC tee
- 1 x bottle for collecting condensate water
- 2 x black exterior pipes, 675mm each
- 2 x black PVC reduction couplings
- 2 x insulations, 675mm each
- 2 x roof flashings
- 1 x insect netting
3. How to Install the Ventilation System and Prepare Your Bionova Toilet
1) Preparation Before Installation
🔧Tools needed:
- 50mm hole saw or jigsaw
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Asphalt sealant / adhesive
- Ladder (if height requires)
🧐On-site checks and preparations:
- Place the toilet on a level surface with some clearance.
- Ensure the floor space is sufficient; minimum: width 47cm x length 60cm.
- Make sure a power outlet is available nearby.
- Consider how the vent will be installed, as it may impact windows or the roof.
2) Installation Steps
- Position the toilet against the wall, ensuring the floor is level and insulated.
- Insert the PVC tee into the hole at the back of the toilet, then use a 90-degree elbow to direct the vent pipe where needed. Attach the condensate collection bottle to the side of the PVC tee.
- Measure and cut a 50mm diameter hole in the ceiling for the vent pipe.
- Measure and cut a 50mm diameter hole in the roof.
- Push the vent pipe through the roof hole, connect with a pipe coupling, and seal with asphalt sealant between the pipe and the roof to prevent leaks.
- Use insulations to insulate the entire pipe section from the ceiling to the top, including through cold areas like the attic. (* This prevents condensation and enhances natural draft. Insulation is essential regardless of usage frequency, even if only used in summer.)
- Cut the exterior pipe to match the roof's angle.
- Place the roof flashing on the external pipe (using soapy water for easier fitting).
- Pass the exterior pipe over the insulated vent pipe, attach the reduction coupling, and seal with asphalt sealant around the roof flashing.
- Fit the insect netting on the stop of the reduction coupling.
4. Testing the Ventilation System
Once installed, don't forget to test:
- Turn on the fan, listen for smooth operation and check for any unusual noises.
- Feel near the exhaust outlet to confirm airflow outward.
- Ensure all connections are tight and airtight, with no odors escaping.
* If the fan doesn’t turn on or sounds abnormal, turn off the power immediately and recheck wiring and connections.
